  • Description

Hundreds of thousands of acres of land have been inundated in extensive flooding in northern areas of India, following a rapid thaw in the highlands to the north and heavy rain. Tens of thousands of people have been driven from their homes, and incalcuable damage has been caused to agricultural land, which will remain scarred and infertile for several seasons.

Assam, in the area bordered by the Himalayas, the destruction has been most devastating. A valley state, almost the entire length of the province has been affected by the flooding, and at least 64,000 people has left their homes.

Relief operations have been set in motion, but these have proved difficult because of the swollen rivers. Relief workers face tremendous dangers in their efforts to ferry urgent essential supplies across fast flowing waterways.

In the region, at least 500 people are feared drowned as the unprecedented torrent swept away entire villagers, bridges and roadways. The Central government has launched a relief programme, supplying manpower and money to devastated areas.
