  • Description

Former Argentine President Alejandro Lanusse and three of his top aides appeared in a Buenos Aires court on Tuesday (24 May) to appeal against charges of corruption. One defence lawyer compared the treatment of General Lanusse to a "Nurmberg trial".

SYNOPSIS: General Lanusse and his aides have been charged with corruption in connection with a contract to set up Argentina's first aluminium plant. The former President appeared in court to appeal his arrest. General Lanusse was head of a junta which ruled Argentina from 1971 to 1973. Admiral Pedro Gnavi, Air Force Brigadier Carlo Rey -- both members of that junta -- and former Defence Minister Rafael Caceres Monie were all arrested with General Lanusse three weeks ago. But only the former President appeared before the appeal court.

The appeal judges were told by defence lawyer Sebastian Soler that the publicity the trial had received -- both the Argentina and abroad -- made it resemble a Nurmberg trial. Another lawyer argued the charges were based on political and not judicial considerations. The court is expected to hand down its decision later this week.

The defence lawyer's comparison of the publicity and the Nurmberg Trials was a reference to the war crimes trials after the Second World War.
