Background: Ice floes on the River Danube in West Germany.... VISNEWS filmed ice-breakers between Passau and Jochenstein (on the border with Austria) Jan 20. The floes had brought navigation to a halt.

The Danube is the most important river in southern Europe. It rises in the Black Forest mountains (West Germany) and empties into the Black Sea. Its length - 1,750 miles.

Fed by at least 300 tributaries - many of which are themselves mighty streams - the Danube is joined by the River Inn at Passau. From source to mouth, the Danube drains an area of 320,200 square miles.
