  • Description

AT THE NAIROBI SNAKE PARK, IN KENYA, EXPERTS ARE WORKING WITH A TEAM OF DOCTORS FROM GLASGOW UNIVERSITY WHO HAVE BEEN FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS CARRYING OUT RESEARCH INTO THE POSSIBLE USE OF THE VENOM FROM POISONOUS SNAKES IN THE ARREST AND CURE OF THROMBOSIS. THE RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT VENOM FROM THE GREEN MAMBA SNAKE IS A POWERFUL ANTI-COAGULANT - IT PREVENTS BLOOD CLOTTING.

THROMBOSIS IS A DISEASE IN WHICH THE BLOOD CLOTS. EACH YEAR IT CLAIMS MANY VICTIMS, AS THE BLOOD HARDENS IN THE VEINS AND ARTERIES. THROMBOSIS IS ONE OF THE COMMONEST GROUPS OF DISEASES IN THE WORLD TODAY, AND INCLUDES HEART - ATTACKS, GANGRENE OF THE FEET, AND 'WHITE LEG' IN PREGNANT WOMEN.

IN ITS NATURAL STATE THE VENOM FROM THE GREEN MAMBA NOT ONLY STOPS THE BLOOD FROM CLOTHING, BUT IT ALSO ATTACKS THE NERVOUS SYSTEM. EXPERIMENTS ARE NOW BEING CARRIED OUT TO ISOLATE THE TWO CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VENOM.

THE RESEARCH STARTED WHEN THE DOCTORS ARRIVED FROM GLASGOW TO SET UP KENYA'S MEDICAL SCHOOL. SINCE THEN THE CURATOR OF THE SNAKE PARK, MR. JANES ASHE, HAS BEEN IN CLOSE CO-OPERATION WITH THEM, AND HAS BEEN GIVING THEM HIS WIDE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HABITS OF SNAKES. THROUGH HIM, THE GROUP HAS ALSO STUDIED THE VENOM OF THE KING COBRA, NOT FOUND IN KENYA, BUT OF WHICH THE SNAKE PARK HAS SPECIMENS.

THE RESEARCH IS ALSO BEING SUPPORTED BY THE PFIZER TROPICAL CLINICAL RESEARCH LABORATORIES, AND FURTHER RESEARCH IS BEING CARRIED OUT AT GLASGOW UNIVERSITY.

ONE OF THE DOCTORS WHO IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON THE PROJECT, AT THE KENYATTA HOSPITAL IN NAIROBI, IS DR. CAMPBELL FURGUSON.
