  • Description

Catching wild horse.... a task that comes round at the end of each May-time in West Germany. Once they are rounded up and broken they will be put to work on farms.

First the stallions are separated from the mares - these are from the moors at Merfeld, near Muenster. Few wild horses still roam in Western Europe, though Merfeld is famous for them; so are the Marshlands of Camargue in the Rhone Estuary of Southern France.

This herd this year numbers 150 living in freedom on the moors.

Stallions are the only captives - the mares are returned to the herd for keeping up its numerical strength by breeding.

Each stallion is branded with the mark of the owner of the horses -he is the West German Duke of Croy. Afterwards the horses are sold, sometimes for as much as 500 marks each.

Once tame... they will be ready for use on small farms. Another use - riding, especially for children.
