  • Description

LEADING SOUTH KOREAN CIVILIAN POLITICIANS STAGED A MASS PUBLIC RALLY IN SEOUL ON SUNDAY AGAINST THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT. MORE THAN 30,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE RALLY, SPONSORED BY THE "STRUGGLE COMMITTEE FOR OPPOSING MILITARY RULE EXTENSION". THE COMMITTEE WAS ORGANISED BY CIVILIAN POLITICIANS.

SPEAKERS URGED THE MILITARY JUNTA TO CARRY OUT ITS PROMISE TO RETURN POWER TO CIVILIANS. THEY SAID THE "POOR POLICIES" OF THE JUNTA HAD LED TO A RICE SHORTAGE AND INFLATION.

EX-PRESIDENT POSUN YUN SAID KOREA'S FUTURE SHOULD NOT BE IN THE HANDS OF MILITARY RULERS, "WHO CHANGE THEIR MINDS AND POLICIES SO FREQUENTLY." HE CRITICISED THE GOVERNMENT FOR EXPORTING RICE WHEN THERE WAS A SHORTAGE AT HOME.

MRS. SUN CHUN PARK, A FORMER LEADER OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, SAID CORRUPTIONS STILL EXISTED WITHIN THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT. IF GENERAL PARK, THE MILITARY LEADER, INTENDED RUNNING FOR PRESIDENCY IN THE COMING ELECTION, SHE SAID, A NEW CABINET SHOULD BE FORMED TO ENSURE A FAIR POLL.

THE 3 1/2-HOUR RALLY PASSED OFF PEACEFULLY.
