    AT LEAST 14 PEOPLE WERE KILLED WHEN RAINSTORM BATTERED HONG KONG ON THURSDAY, CAUSING LANDSLIDES AND FLOODING LOW- LYING AREAS. AT LEAST 300 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN LEFT HOMELESS.

    THOSE KILLED WERE RECOVERED FROM UNDER TONS OF MUD AND ROCK AFTER LANDSLIDES IN TWO SEPARATE AREAS OF THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF HONG KONG ISLAND, HOWEVER, MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE STILL MISSING.

    THE FLOODS CAME AFTER 10 INCHES (25 CMS) OF RAIN FELL BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND 8 A.M. ON THURSDAY. LANDSLIDES BLOCKED ROADS IN SEVERAL PARTS OF HONG KONG ISLAND AND KOWLOON BUSES AND TRAINS COULD NOT RUN IN SOME AREAS AND THOUSANDS OF WORKERS WERE STRANDED BY THE ROADSIDE.

    THOUSANDS OF HONG KONG RESIDENTS LIVE IN HUTS PERCHED ON HILLSIDES, AND ARE IN PARTICULAR DANGER OF INUNDATION BY MUD AND WATER DURING THE FLOODS. IN FLOODS EXACTLY TWO YEARS AGO, AT LEAST 90 PEOPLE WERE KILLED.
