    AUTHORITIES IN ORANGEBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA HAVE ARRESTED SEVEN HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-THREE CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATORS IN THE LAST THREE DAYS OF SEPTEMBER.

    THE TOWN'S JAIL IS HOPELESSLY OVERCROWDED AND LARGE NUMBERS OF THOSE ARRESTED HAVE HAD TO BE CONFINED IN MAKESHIFT FACILITIES OR AT THE STATE PRISON FARM THIRTY-FIVE MILES AWAY.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS HAVE STAGED MARCHES AND OTHER DEMONSTRATIONS PROTESTING AGAINST SEGREGATION IN A NUMBER OF PUBLIC PLACES.THEY ARE ALSO DEMANDING EQUAL JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND EQUAL TREATMENT IN THE COMMUNITY'S STORES.MOST OF THEM ARE STUDENTS AT TWO NEARBY ALL-NEGRO COLLEGES - SOUTH CAROLINA STATE COLLEGE AND CLAFLIN COLLEGE.AUTHORITIES HAVE ARRESTED THE DEMONSTRATORS EACH TIME THEY APPEARED.

    ON 30 SEPTEMBER, 189 WERE ARRESTED WHILE MARCHING TOWARDS THE DOWNTOWN BUSINESS DISTRICT.THEY WERE CONFINED BRIEFLY IN A PARKING LOT.POLICE AND FIREMEN BROUGHT OUT A FIREHOSE.IT WAS NOT USED, HOWEVER.LATER, 160 NEGROES WERE PERMITTED TO MARCH THROUGH THE DOWNTOWN AREA AFTER THEY PROMISED AUTHORITIES THE DEMONSTRATION WOULD BE PEACEFUL.

    MOST OF THOSE ARRESTED HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH BREAKING THE PEACE OR TRESPASSING.
