  • Description

POLLING BOOTHS HAVE BEEN OPEN ALL-DAY TODAY (THURSDAY) IN LONDON'S BIGGEST-EVER LOCAL ELECTIONS. THE WEATHER TURNED OUT FINE WITH LONG SUNNY PERIODS AND MAY VOTERS EXERCISED THEIR RIGHT.

MORE THAN FIVE MILLION PEOPLE WERE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE AT THE BOOTHS WHICH CLOSED AT NINE O'CLOCK TONIGHT. THIS NUMBER REPRESENTS A SIXTH OF BRITAIN'S TOTAL ELECTORATE. CAMPAIGNING HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR SOME WEEKS WITH THREE HUNDRED AND FORTY CANDIDATES, MOSTLY REPRESENTING EITHER THE CONSERVATIVE, LIBERAL OR LABOUR PARTIES SEEKING ELECTION TO THE ONE HUNDRED SEATS ON THE GREATER LONDON COUNCIL.

BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER, SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME WAS AMONG THE EARLIER VOTERS. HE CAST HIS VOTE AT WESTMINSTER SOON AFTER NINE O'CLOCK THIS MORNING. MR. WILSON, THE LEADER OF THE LABOUR OPPOSITION PARTY, VOTED HALF-AN-HOUR LATER.

(AS VOTING IN THE GREATER LONDON ELECTIONS DREW TO A CLOSE TONIGHT IT WAS ANNOUNCED FROM NO 10 DOWNING STREET, THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICIAL RESIDENCE, THAT THE GENERAL ELECTION WOULD BE HELD IN THE AUTUMN. THE GOVERNMENT'S OFFICIAL TERM OF OFFICE ENDS ON NOVEMBER 5 - AND BY THE BRITISH CONSTITUTION THE PRIME MINISTER MAY CALL ON AN ELECTION AT ANY TIME BEFORE THIS DATE.)
