  • Description

STUDENTS MILITANT PROTESTING ABOUT THE CLOSING OF THE DISPUTE-RIDDEN LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS MARCHED THROUGH CENTRAL LONDON TONIGHT TO DEMAND ITS REOPENING.

THE TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION WAS THE LATEST MOVE IN THE AFFAIRS OF THE SCHOOL, FOLLOWING VIOLENCE WHICH BROKE OUT THERE LAST FRIDAY. EARLIER IN THE DAY, THIRTEEN STUDENTS HAD BEEN RESTRAINED FROM ENTERING THE SCHOOL BY COURT ORDER. LAST NIGHT, BRITISH EDUCATION MINISTER MR. EDWARD SHORT SAID THE TROUBLE AT THE SCHOOL WAS THE WORK OF "THUGS OF THE ACADEMIC WORLD."
SOLID RANKS OF POLICE, BACKED BY MOUNTED POLICE, BLOCKED THE NARROW STREET OUTSIDE LSE WHEN THE STUDENTS PROCESSION ARRIVED, CARRYING BANNERS AND CHANTING SLOGANS.

LATER, THE STUDENTS MOVED ON TO STAGE ANOTHER DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE A LONDON NEWSPAPER OFFICE WHOSE CHAIRMAN, LORD ROBBINS, IS ALSO CHAIRMAN OF THE SCHOOL.

AUTHORITIES AT THE SCHOOL TODAY OBTAINED HIGH COURT INJUNCTIONS AGAINST THIRTEEN STUDENTS, SAID TO BE THE RINGLEADERS OF RECENT VIOLENCE. THE ORDER RESTRAINS THEM FROM ENTERING THE SCHOOL OR INTERFERING WITH ITS ADMINISTRATION.

IN ADDITION, TWO MEMBERS OF THE TEACHING STAFF FACE DISCIPLINARY ACTION FRO AIDING THE MILITANTS. ONE OF THEM, SOCIOLOGY LECTURER MR. LAWRENCE HARRIS, FACES FOUR CHARGES.
