Background: President Yakubu Gowon of Nigeria and two other African Heads of State travelling with him, President Dawda Kairaba Jawara of Gambia and President Mathieu Kerakou of Dahomey, stopped off in Ethiopia on Sunday (9th June) for talks with Emperor Haile Selassie. The three leaders were on their way to Mogadishu, capital of Somalia, for the annual summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

General Gowon is current Chairman of the OAU, and as well as holding talks with the Emperor, he had talks with OAU officials before continuing his journey. When General Gowon arrived in Mogadishu on Monday (10th June) he was reported to be carrying a message from the Portuguese President, General de Spinola, explaining Portugal's peace moves in Africa. The significance of the change of government for Portugal's African territories is expected to be an important topic at the conference.

After a brief stopover in Addis Ababa, President Kerekou of Dahomey left for Mogadishu. General Gowon and President Jawara of Gambia stayed longer and were later entertained at a banquet by the Emperior.
