  • Description

Restaurant and hotel workers in Rome began their two-day strike for better pay and working conditions on Tuesday (1 July) leaving thousands of tourists without service, food and drink.

In hotels where guests were allowed to stay on, many of the normal services, such as bar and room service were not functioning. And many bars and restaurants in the city, which are not operated by families, were also closed.

The workers are currently in conflict with the Ministry of Tourism mainly over conditions of work. They wanted bars and restaurants to close for a mandatory two days a week instead of the present one.

The strikers, who picked the height of the tourist season for their industrial actions, also staged a march from the Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four basilicas of Rome to the Ministry of Tourism.

And as they ended their strike on Wednesday, airline and airport workers were due to strike for 24 hours on Thursday, again, over pay and conditions.
