  • Description

THE PARIS NEWSPAPERS, "LIBERATION", WENT ON SALE IN THE STREETS OF THE CITY FOR THE LAST TIME TODAY (FRIDAY). THE PAPER MADE ITS FIRST APPEARANCE IN 1941, DURING THE NAZI OCCUPATION. DURING THE REMAINDER OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR IT WAS CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE FRENCH RESISTANCE MOVEMENT.

THE OWNER OF THE PAPER WAS M. EMMANUEL D'ASTIER DE LA VIGERIE, ALTHOUGH FINANCIAL BACKING AND CONTROL CAME FROM THE FRENCH COMMUNIST PARTY. THE "LIBERATION" WAS PRINTED ON THE PRESSES OF "L'HUMANITE", OFFICIAL PAPER OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY.

IN RECENT YEARS HOWEVER, THE PAPER HAS SUFFERED FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. IT WAS REPORTED IN TODAY'S "FIGARO" THAT M. D'ASTIER HAD SOUGHT BACKING OUTSIDE THE COMMUNIST PARTY, AND THAT THIS MOVE HAD LED TO THE COMMUNIST PARTY DECIDING TO CEASE PUBLICATION.

IN HIS FINAL MESSAGE TO THE READERS, M. D'ASTIER SAID "FOR MATERIAL, AND POLITICAL REASONS AS WELL, NO DOUBT WE HAVE FAILED."
