Background: Another violent earthquake hit the already battered adriatic port of Ancona on Wednesday(21 June), and people still in the city again moved quickly into the countryside. On Thursday (22 June), many families were living in tents on Ancona's outskirts, while in the city itself rubble and wrecked buildings were common features.

An observatory near Ancona said the latest quake registered seven points on the 12-point Marcalli scale.

The new shock came as Aconona was beginning to recover from two powerful quakes over a week ago. The earlier quake, which registered nine points on the Mercalli scale, killed three people from heart failure, injured dozens and damaged hundreds of buildings.

After Wednesday's shock, shops closed abruptly, and people abandoned their houses and offices. Firemen rushed to the city's old quarter following reports that new cracks had appeared in already damaged houses.

The military command for the neighbouring region of Tuscany and Emilia immediately arranged for further men, vehicles and supplies to be sent to Ancona.

Ancona is an important port and shipbuilding centre whose economy is being severely affected by the quakes. The town is still considered to be a danger zone and, although people do come in during the day, most of the population still retreats to the tent cities outside Ancona at night.

Government plans are being considered to enable the city to recoup some of the estimated 200,000 million Pounds Sterling worth of damage.
