    RADIO STOCKHOLM ANNOUNCED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) THAT THE ISRAELI WRITER, MR. SHMUEL YOSEF AGNON, HAD BEEN NOMINATED FOR THIS YEAR'S NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE. IN JERUSALEM, THE ISRAELI BROADCASTING SERVICE QUOTED A REPORT FROM STOCKHOLM THAT THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE AWARD WOULD BE MADE TOMORROW (THURSDAY).

    MR. AGNON, WHO IS 78, WAS BORN IN POLAND AND WENT TO LIVE IN PALESTINE, AS IT THEN WAS, IN 1907. HIS MAIN PUBLICATIONS ARE EIGHT VOLUMES OF SHORT STORIES AND NOVELS. HE WRITES IN CLASSICAL HEBREW STRONGLY INFLUENCED BY THE LANGUAGE OF THE BIBLE. MANY OF HIS WORKS DEAL WITH PEOPLE AND SITUATIONS IN HIS OLD POLISH-UKRAINIAN HOMELAND.

    THE BEST-KNOWN OF HIS WORKS ARE "BRIDAL CANOPY", BOTH THESE AND OTHER THINGS," "A WAYFARER STAYING THE NIGHT" AND "YOU HAVE SEEN." THE LAST IS A COLLECTION OF WRITINGS ON THE DIVINE REVALUATIONS ON MOUNT SINAI AND EXPRESS MR. AGNON'S DEEP RELIGIOUS BELIEFS.

    THE ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER, MR. ESHKOL, HAS SENT A MESSAGE OF CONGRATULATION TO MR. AGNON, EXPRESSING HIS ADMIRATION FOR THE AUTHOR'S CONTRIBUTION TO MODERN HEBREW LITERATURE.

    MR. AGNON LIVES IN THE JERUSALEM SUBURB OF TALPIOT. OUR FILM SHOWS HIM WITH MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY AND BEING INTERVIEWED BY NEWSMEN AFTER IT WAS LEARNED THAT HE HAD BEEN NOMINATED FOR THE NOBEL PRIZE.
