  • Description

South Korea's President Chung-hee Park said today (Tuesday) his country's current dialogue with North Korea should be supported by solid internal unity in the south in order to achieve a unification under the democratic system.

The president was speaking at a rally in Seoul to mark the 27th anniversary of Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule.

Liberation Day came a few weeks after a joint communique issued by the north and south on July 4th to bury old hostility and open an official dialogue between the two sides, pledging independent Korean efforts for peaceful unifications.

President Park said today he could not emphasise too much that this was one of the most hopeful and most important moments in the annuals of Korean history.

Substantive talks will open in Pyongyang on August 30th between the north and south Red Cross organizations for reuniting an estimated 10-million Korean left divided by the war of 1950-53.

But despite the new spirit of reapproachment, both sides still appear a long way apart on how the two Koreas should be put together.
