  • Description

THIRTY EGYPTIAN SCHOOL CHILDREN AND TEACHER WERE KILLED WHEN ISRAELI BOMBS SMASHED INTO THEIR VILLAGE SCHOOL ON THE EDGE OF THE NILE DELTA YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8TH). SCORES MORE WERE WOUNDED WHEN PHANTOM JETS RAIDED THE AREA, KNOWN AS SHARKIA PROVINCE, ABOUT 50-MILES (80 KMS) NORTH OF CAIRO.

THE BOMBS FELL ON THE SCHOOL BUILDING SHORTLY AFTER LESSONS HAD BEGUN FOR THE DAY. SOME CHILDREN WHO WERE STILL IN THE PLAYGROUND, SAW THE PLANES APPROACHING AND RAN INSIDE.

THE HEADMASTER SAID LATER THAT FIVE BOMBS WERE DROPPED, THREE OF WHICH FELL ON THE SMALL SINGLE-STOREY STONE SCHOOL, AND TWO ROCKETS.

REPORTERS SAW THE BADLY MUTILATED BODIES OF THE DEAD CHILDREN WHEN PARENTS AND RELATIVES ARRIVED TO TAKE THEM FOR BURIAL. THEIR AGES APPEARED TO RANGE ABOUT EIGHT TO 14-YEARS-OLD.

IT WAS REPORTED THE BIGGEST DEATH TOLL OF CHILDREN FROM ISRAELI ACTION SINCE THE JUNE WAR OF 1967. COMFORTING INJURED AND BURNED VICTIMS IN THE LOCAL HOSPITAL, THE MINISTER OF SOCIAL WELFARE WHO MADE AN EMERGENCY VISIT TO THE SCENE, DESCRIBED THE BOMBING "AS A SENSELESS ACT".
