  • Description

Power swimming by four Australian stars earned them a Gold Medal to take home from Edinburgh, scene of the Commonwealth Games, for their exciting efforts in the Men's 4 X 100 metres race.

The Australian team, comprising G. Roger, W. Devenish, G. White and double Olympic Gold Medallist, Mike Wenden, went straight into the lead from the start.

The only real challenge came from the Canadian swimmers who battled determinedly to come a close second and earn a Silver Medal.

In third place was England, over five seconds behind the winners, but qualifying for the Bronze award.

Teams from Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, New Zealand, Jamaica, Wales and Singapore competed in the speed contest, which the Australians won in 3 minutes 36.02 seconds. Canada's time was 3 minutes 37.65 seconds, and England's 3 minutes 41.24 seconds.

Australia had to swim in the choppy water of Lane One-the lane originally drawn by Canada. The Canadians objected to the draw and were moved to a centre lane. An Australian objection to their placing was overruled. The result, however, indicated the Australian supremacy in spite of the draw.
