  • Description

Twenty-three people have so-far died and hundreds are feared injured as heavy flooding continues along the Italian Riviera in the Genoa area today (Thursday).

People, cars, buses, scooters, animals and trees were swept away as six-foot(two metre) high torrent of water surged through streets after the River Bisagno burst its banks in the city centre.

Communications were cut with outlying towns and villages and in the city shops were damaged. Frogmen have been involved in the relief work and the city has been reduced to emergency lighting.

The high water level in local rivers and streams is beginning to threaten bridges and rain was reported to be falling again late in the evening bringing renewed fears of further flooding.

Main roads have been blocked and broken by hill-slides and water erosion. As workmen tried to keep vital highways open mud and slime up to nine feet deep (three metres) had been reported in the nearby town of Voltri.
