    TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 5):

"In fact from where I could see them after these guys cam out of the prison. They were hopeless -- er, helpless really, they couldn't fight back."

QUESTION: "And again how many did you see beaten?"

ANSWER: "I saw at least en guys beaten, and beaten severely."

QUESTION: "Were they given any medical attention ?"

ANSWER: "They were thrown, literally thrown by the -- indistinct -- into a Department of Correction bus".

QUESTION: " But the other story is that these men were dragged out for the most part, had not surrendered and then were beaten?"

ANSWER: "That could've been. From where I could see the door began. They were dragged out there and as soon as they got out there a platform there and the beating began on the platform an continued on to the ground beneath it."

QUESTION: "There are reports of the inmate being beaten by guards. Unprovoked attacks on the inmates by Correction Guards. What is you opinion on that or comment on that, if you know anything about it ?"

MAYOR LINDSAY: "Well, I've been advised that there have been some injuries on both sides, in respect of some of the guards and some of the inmates, and I've asked the commissioner for a complete and detailed report on any injuries, the source of them how they came about it."

PRISONER (SEQ 8): Aw gee, it's all a game. They're all phoney, all these phoney promises. They should tear the whole place apart, that's what they should do.

Background: Rioting prisoners in New York jails yesterday (October 5) released their last three hostages after an ultimatum from New York Mayor, John Lindsay. A spokesman for the mayor announced that the hostage, last of the 26 held in three city jails since disorders broke out last Thursday (October 1), were unharmed.

But as the rebellion ended, prisoners and other onlookers alleged that some of the men had been victims of unprovoked beatings by prison officers.

The last three hostages, being held in Queens County jail, were freed after Mayor Lindsay had given the prisoners 30 minutes to release their captives or face "other sources of action". He sent some 500 heavily armed police and security officers to the jail on Long Island to await results.

Although the hostages were released, 35 prisoners were still holding out on the top floor on the Queens jail. Among them were nine of the 13 defendants in Black Panther bombing conspiracy trial.

Most of the prisoners gave up quietly after their four-day siege, their improvised weapons -- which included clubs and sharpened spoons -- and walked out into the courtyard of the prison which was built 86 years ago.
