Background: The Leander Club and Thames Tradesmen's Rowing Club stopped an overseas domination of the 1975 Henley Regatta in the U.K. on Sunday (6 July).

The Leander and Thames eight caused almost an upset when they defeated the highly fancied Harvard University in the final of the Grand Challenge Cup.

Both boats had set record times in their semi-final wins...6 minutes 13 seconds...but the American crew, with half of America's world champions in the boat, were favoured because they outweighed the British crew by five pounds per man.

However, the British national eight, rowing in the colours of their own Leander and Thames clubs, triumphed by two lengths in a slightly slower time than expected - 6 minutes 16 seconds.

Despite a home victory in the Challenge Cup, most of the other premiere events of the regatta went to foreign teams.

The Dutch pair of Droog and Luyenburg won the Silver Goblets Cup and the Canadian team from Ridley College won the other major final, the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup.
