    SIGNOR GIUSEPPE SARAGAT, ELECTED PRESIDENT OF ITALY YESTERDAY (MONDAY) BY THE TWO HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT AFTER AN UNPRECEDENTED 13 DAYS OF BALLOTING, TOOK THE CATCH OF OFFICE TODAY, AND SAID HE WOULD WORK FOR PEACE, DISARMAMENT, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE.

    SIGNOR SARAGAT, UNTIL TODAY THE FOREIGN MINISTER IN SIGNOR ALDO MORO'S COALITION GOVERNMENT, WAS ELECTED LAST NIGHT ON THE 21 T BALLOT BY THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES AND THE SENATE VOTING IN JOINT SESSION.

    HE RECEIVED 646 VOTES ON THE 21ST BALLOT, 164 MORE THAN HE NEEDED FOR A SIMPLE MAJORITY ELECTION.

    SHOUTS OF PROTEST AND BOOING FROM THE MEMBERS OF THE ITALIAN SOCIAL MOVEMENT ALMOST DROWNED THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF SARAGAT'S PROCLAMATION AS PRESIDENT AND SIGNOR BUCCIARELLI DUCCI, PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER, HAD TO SHOUT TO MAKE HIMSELF HEARD.

    SIGNOR SARAGAT'S ELECTION BECAME POSSIBLE WHEN DEPUTY-PREMIER, PIETRO NENNI, WITHDREW AFTER RECEIVING 385 VOTES ON THE 20TH BALLOT ON MONDAY MORNING, WITH THE BACKING OF HIS OWN SOCIALIST PARTY, THE LEFT-WING SOCIALISTS OF PROLETARIAN UNITY, AND THE COMMUNISTS.

    WITH NENNI'S WITHDRAWAL, THE FOUR PARTIES OF THE CENTRE-LEFT COALITION, AND THE COMMUNISTS, DECIDED TO SUPPORT SARAGAT
    SIGNOR SARAGAT, A 66 YEAR-OLD SOCIAL DEMOCRAT, HAS NOW TAKEN THE PLACE OF ANTONIO SEGNI, WHO HAS NOT FULLY RECOVERED FROM THE STROKE HE SUFFERED EARLIER THIS YEAR.
