A Eurasian is to be the next President of the multi-racial island republic of singapore. He is Dr. Benjamin Sheares, a 63-year-old gynaecologist, with no known political affiliations. He was unanimously elected to the post by Singapore's Parliament yesterday (Wednesday).
Dr Sheares is married to a Chinese woman -- a former midwife -- and has three group -up children.
He will became Singapore's second head of state, succeeding the late President Yusof bin Ishak, who died last month after 11 years as the island's first President.
The President's functions are mainly ceremonial, for under the Republic's constitution he has little share in government decisions.
But Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, whose nomination of Dr Sheares was the only one submitted to Parliament, said that the new President would officiate at the 31-nation commonwealth Heads of Government conference which opens in Singapore in two weeks time.
