  • Description

More than 60 Kings, Presidents and Heads of States have flocked to Algiers for the conference of non-aligned nations which was opened on Wednesday nigh (5 September) by host Algerian President Houari Boumedienne. In addition, 105 Foreign Ministers and other observers will attend the four-day summit session.

Among the arrivals on Tuesday (4 September) were Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organisation; the Libyan leader, Colonel Gadaffi; and President Anwar Sadat, of Egypt. All were officially welcomed by President Boumedienne.

The main aim of the conference -- which opened in an atmosphere of militancy -- is to find ways of protecting the interests of small countries, and ending domination of their economies by major powers. The question of Israel and the occupied territories also will figure largely in debates, with emphasis on the use of oil as an economic pressure weapon.
