Background: One of the China's highly-prized and rare mammal species, the Giant Panda, has a competitor which runs it a close second. It is the Golden-Haired monkey and is to be found only in a few zoos in Western China, including Beijing.

SYNOPSIS: The golden-haired monkey, sometimes known as the snub-nosed monkey, is one of the country's rarest animals, usually found in the border area between Sichuan and Shanxi provinces in the western part of China. In its blue face, the nostrils flare upward, presenting a bit of a problem when it rains. The monkey is then obliged to use its long tail, or front paw to provide rain cover. The monkey's long golden hair can measure almost 20 centimetres on its back.

This little monkey was born in the Beijing zoo two and a half years ago. Since the age of seven months it has been cared for by this keeper. Its fangs are shorter than the adults, but the two of them have become close and trusting friends. And the young monkey is said to be very sweet-natured.

And although he lives normally in a cage, he displays no fear of the tourists who visit the zoo. In its natural habitat the golden-haired monkey is mainly vegetarian, living in the forests off wild fruit, tender leaves and bamboo shoots.

In the wild, these monkeys normally live in families. The adults are large, often weighing-in at almost thirty five kilograms with strong bodies and well-developed limbs. This couple have no offspring, since the male is much older than the female. The young wife is lively and vivacious and badgers her more reserved mate into affectionate cuddling. He seems to ???sent the camera's intrusion.

The male might feel impatient with this constant attention from his spouse, but he gives in with mature patience.
