    AS PART OF A PLAN TO EASE FOOD SHORTAGES, THE GOVERNMENT OF CEYLON HAS LAUNCHED A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO GROW VEGETABLES IN THEIR GARDENS. THE ULTIMATE AIM IS TO MAKE THE ISLAND NATION SELF-SUFFICIENT.

    THE CAMPAIGN, WHICH WILL INVOLVE SOME THREE MILLION PEOPLE IN CEYLON, WAS LAUNCHED BY THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS, MR. I.M. IRIYAGOLLE. DURING THE CAMPAIGN, ISLANDERS ARE BEING URGED TO GROW VEGETABLES IN THEIR GARDENS TO SOLVE THE FOOD CRISIS.

    CEYLON'S FOOD PROBLEM IS BEING EASED WITH THE HELP OF FOREIGN AID, BUT AS A FIRST STEP, ISLANDERS WITH GARDENS ARE BEING ASKED TO HELP.

    ALSO, AS PART OF THE SAME CAMPAIGN, PEOPLE ARE URGED TO CLEAN UP PUBLIC PARKS, GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS AND VILLAGES AND TO HELP NURSE THE SICK IN HOSPITALS.
