  • Description

"Proteus", the headquarters ship of the United States Polaris submarine squadron, berthed Mar 3 in Holy Loch, Scotland.

A small group of demonstrators in three kayak canoes had attempted to impede nor progress as she steamed up the River Clyde but they were soon chased off by police launches.

The Commanding officer of the "Proteus" Captain Robert Laneng, told journalists that his ship was not involved in the firing of Polaris missiles.

In reply to further questions, the captain said that the "Proteus" would be berthed in Holy Loch, and nowhere else, and he did not expect that Polaris submarines would visit other ports in the United Kingdom.

The "Proteus" has a ship's company of 45 officers and 930 men. It was expected that about 200 would bring their families to Scotland in the summer.
