  • Description

SOUTH AFRICA'S EASY VICTORY ON SATURDAY IN THE FINAL STAGES OF THE 4TH TEST AGAINST THE TOURING AUSTRALIAN WALLABIES AT PORT ELIZABETH - A WIN OF 22 POINTS TO 6.

THE VICTORY ENABLED THEM TO SHARE THE RUBBER WITH AUSTRALIA AND MAINTAIN PORT ELIZABETH'S REPUTATION AS SOUTH AFRICA'S LUCKY RUGBY VENUE. SOUTH AFRICA HAVE NOT BEEN BEATEN IN A TEST MATCH IN PORT ELIZABETH FOR 53 YEARS.

BUT IT WAS NOT A PLEASANT DAY FOR RUGBY IN PARTICULAR. WHEN THE SPRINGBOKS WENT INTO THE LEAD AT 14-6 SOME 5,000 NON-WHITE SPECTATORS, SECTIONS OF WHOM HAD BOOED AND CHANTED WHENEVER SOUTH AFRICA TOOK KICKS AT GOAL, STARTED UP A RUMPUS.

WHEN THE MILLING CROWDS WERE REMOVED FROM THE FIELD THE SOUTH AFRICANS BRUSHED ASIDE ALL OPPOSITION AND WERE COMPLETELY IN COMMAND WHEN THE CAME ENDED. IT TOOK SOUTH AFRICA THE BEST PART OF AN HOUR TO SUBDUE THIS DETERMINED AUSTRALIAN TEAM. IN FACT, JUST AFTER HALF-TIME THE WALLABIES LED 6-3 AND THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE N THE FIELD TO SUGGEST THAT THE SPRINGBOKS WOULD WIPE OUT THE ARREARS.

ALONG PENALTY KICK BY TINY NAUDE PUT THE SPRINGBOKS ON EQUAL TERMS AND FROM THAT STAGE THERE WAS ONLY ONE TEAM IN THE PICTURE. THOUGH BEATEN IN MOST OF THE LINE-OUTS THE SPRINGBOK FORWARDS WERE VERY POWERFUL IN THE SCRUMS. MYBURGH WAS A SUCCESSFUL SELECTION AND THE SAME CAN BE SAID OF NAUDE. IN THE LAST QUARTER OF THE GAME HOPWOOD, BEDFORD AND SCHOEMAN REVIVED MEMORIES OF MANY EXCITING DISPLAYS BY SPRINGBOK LOOSE FORWARDS.

OXLEE, SPLENDIDLY SERVED BY SMITH, LOOKED HAPPIER THAN HE HAS DONE IN TEST RUGBY THIS SEASON. BUT IT TOOK HIM A LONG TIME TO DEVISE WAYS AND MEANS OF BREAKING THE STRANGLE-HOLD WHICH THE MAGNIFICENT WALLABY DEFENCE HAD ON THE GAME. GAINSFORD HAD MORE LAPSES THAN ONE EXPECTS FROM HIM BUT IN THE END HE WAS PLAYING LIKE HIS OLD SELF. DIRKSEN HAD A TEST DEBUT ON THE WING.

IN THE WALLABY PACK THORNETT, CRITTLE, DAVIS AND GUERRASIMOFF WERE OUTSTANDING AND CATCHPOLE, AS EVER, WAS A SCHEMER AT SCRUM-HALF, BUT ON ATTACK THE WALLABY BACKS SELDOM POSED A THREAT TO THE SPRINGBOKS.

THEN CAME MORE ATTACK - OF A LESS SPORTING NATURE... A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF BOTTLE THROWING AND WHEN SOME NON-WHITE POLICEMEN STARTED TO THROW THE BOTTLES BACK INTO THE STANDING ENCLOSURE, THINGS GOT A LITTLE OUT OF HAND.

AS THE SPECTATORS STEAMED OUT OF THE GROUNDS, STONES WERE THROWN AT PARKED CARS AND THE POLICE FOUND IT NECESSARY TO DRAW BATONS WHILE SEVERAL SHOTS WERE FIRED INTO THE AIR AS A WARNING.
