  • Description

In Northern Ireland the first day-light disturbances for four weeks disrupted an area of Belfast today, 14th January. After troops had searched houses in a Belfast suburb, women overturned an army vehicle and threw stones and battles at the soldiers. Youths joined in to attack a church hall which is being used by the army.

The army say that their search of the houses in Belfast revealed a machine gun which they took away. Onlookers said that a soldier in a window overlooking the street opened fire. A spokesman for the army said that a shot was fired to warn the crowds; the incident would be investigated.

No soldiers were hurt in the riot. But some police officers who went to the area had to be treated for minor injuries.
