  • Description

VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLS YESTERDAY (MONDAY) IN CEYLON'S GENERAL ELECTION. TODAY, WITH MOST OF THE RESULTS DECLARED, IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE UNITED NATIONAL PARTY, THE RIGHT WING OPPOSITION PARTY, HAS EMERGED AS THE LARGEST SINGLE PARTY, BUT IS WELL SHORT OF AN OVERALL MAJORITY.

THE VOTERS WERE ELECTING 151 MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT IN A TEST OF THE POPULARITY OF MRS. SIRIMAVO BANDARANAIKE, THE WORLD'S ONLY WOMAN PRIME MINISTER. VOTING BEGAN QUIETLY, BUT GRADUALLY LONG QUEUES FORMED AT MOST POLLING BOOTHS AS NEARLY FIVE MILLION PEOPLE TURNED OUT TO VOTE.

PROTECTION AGAINST INCIDENTS DURING VOTING INCLUDED HEAVY SHUTTERS FOR SHOP FRONTS AND A STRONG FORCE OF POLICE ON DUTY IN MOST AREAS. HOWEVER THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF SERIOUS INCIDENTS.

THE ELECTION WAS BASICALLY A TUSSLE BETWEEN MRS. BANDARANAIKE'S SRI LANKA FREEDOM PARTY, ALLIED WITH THE LANKA SHA SAMAO PARTY, AND THE OPPOSITION U.N.P. LED BY MR. DUDLEY SENANAYAKE, 55-YEAR-OLD FORMER PRIME MINISTER.

IT IS NOW EXPECTED THAT THE TWO LEADING PARTIES WILL SEEK SUPPORT FROM THE SMALLER PARTIES IN AN EFFORT TO GAIN AN OVERALL MAJORITY.....
