  • Description

The United States Air Force has been demonstrating a new homing bomb system called "HOBOS".

"HOBOS" is a contraction of the worlds "homing bomb systems". The system employs automatic guidance and controls using standard bombs, and was evolved from the "Hornet" air-to-surface anti-tank missile system produced by the North American Rockwell Corporation.

The Mark-84 2,000-pound bomb is used as a standard warhead. The control kit attaches to the aft end of the bomb, and any one of a series of guidance kits with television or infrared sensors is attached to the nose. An inter-connecting cable links both units. The system is so simple that standard bombs can be converted in the field.

"HOBOS" is exceptional for its accuracy and reliability and has the advantage of allowing the operator to "lock-on" target before the bomb is launched from the aircraft. After launch it utilises proportional navigation to maintain an optimum line-of-sight path to the target. Film of the demonstration was supplied by the U.S. Ministry of Defence.
