  • Description

THE BRITISH LEYLAND COMPANY HAS ANNOUNCED THAT IT WILL BEGIN MASS PRODUCTION IN 1970 OF THE PROTOTYPE OF A GAS-TURBINE TRUCK WHICH IT DEMONSTRATED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). HOWEVER, THE FIRST OF THESE REVOLUNTIONIONARY JET-POWERED TRUCKS -- THE FIRST IN THE WORLD TO GO INTO COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION -- ARE EXPECTED TO BE ON THE ROADS IN BRITAIN, SOUTH AFRICA AND AUSTRALIA WITHIN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS.

THE LEYLAND TRUCK -- WHICH WILL BE EXHIBITED AT THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR SHOW OPENING IN LONDON TOMORROW -- REPRESENTS A MAJOR TECHNICAL BREAKTHROUGH. THE AMERICAN MOTOR INDUSTRY IS REPORTED TO HAVE SPENT A FORTUNE TRYING TO DEVELOP A VIABLE GAS-TURBINE ENGINE FOR TRUCKS BUT HAS MADE NO COMMERCIAL HEADWAY.

LEYLAND'S NEW JET TRUCK CAN HAUL 40-TON LOADS AT 70 MILES AN HOUR AND IT IS INTENDED MAINLY FOR LONG-DISTANCE RUNS.
