Background: About 20,000 more people in Italy are now homeless after a new series of earth tremors in the country's north. One of the worst hit towns in the shocks over the weekend (12 and 13 September) was Gemona.

SYNOPSIS: Many buildings were completely devastated by the tremors. Gemona is in Italy's Friuli region, which was hit by earthquakes in May this year, killing nearly a thousand people. The most recent tremors reached six points on the Richter scale, equalling the force of the May 'quakes. The rebuilding that had taken place during the summer months was destroyed over the weekend. Workemn have begun to clear the debris and pull down dangerous buildings. But officials say the local population have had their will to fight the disaster sapped by the renewed tremors. Many people have left the area and gone to live elsewhere.

There were fewer casualties in the new tremors than in May, as a large number of people were already living in tents. Their number has now been swollen to almost 40,000, with few houses left standing in the earthquake district.
