Background: Church leaders representing the National Councils of Churches of 25 African countries are meeting in Ghana to examine their role in religious and political affairs on the continent.

SYNOPSIS: A week-long conference began on Wednesday (11 May) in the city of Ho, about 100 miles (164 kms) east of Accra, the Ghanaian capital. Reverend Dovlo, Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, presided over the opening ceremony and welcomed the guests.

The countries represented include Togo, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Swaziland and Mozambique, as well as Botswana, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Sudan, Kenya, Zambia and Zaire. Members of the Geneva-based World Council of Churches, and the Christian Council of South Africa and Zimbabwe, are also attending.

Lieutenant-Colonel Amegor, Volta's Regional Commissioner, also addressed the opening session, during which he stressed the importance of the Churches' role in contemporary Africa. He said that the Churches should promote unity and understanding not only among themselves but also among the peoples of Africa as a whole to help achieve national goals. Throughout the conference members will be discussing ways of attaining these objectives.
