A major information conference is being held this week in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. It's looking at ways of improving communication services and facilities in African and other developing countries.
SYNOPSIS: The seminar which opened on Thursday (22 November) has officially been termed a conference for African Informatics Integration. It was opened by the Ivory Coast's Minister of Economics and Finance, Mr. Abdoulaye Kone.
One hundred and fifty delegates representing 50 countries from Africa, Latin America and Europe are taking part. There are also representatives from the Organisation of African Unity and the Economic Commission for Africa.
The conference is a forerunner to next year's world informatics seminar in Rome. Delegates are considering the latest developments in the communications field including the use of satellites and computers. In particular they're looking at ways in which improved communications and information services can contribute to economic, social and cultural development.
They're also examining the need for more regional and International co-operation. The delegates are being briefed by some of the world's leading communications experts.
