  • Description

Students at the Haile Selassie University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, have spent the last week on a hunger strike. They say they will not end the strike until a list of demands to the government is met.

The hunger strike began on Monday (1st April). One of the main demands listed by the students is the unconditional release of imprisoned members of the Armed Forces. It's believed many members of the Armed Forces were imprisoned following disturbances in Addis Ababa last month, which resulted in the formation of a new government.

The students also demanded that the Government declare a state of emergency to raise funds at home and aborad to fight the drought which threatens many parts of the countryside. To add impact to their demands, the students -- numbering about 6,000 -- handed out bread and water saved from University meals to hungry families on the campus. The gesture came on Thursday (4 April), at the end of a sit down protest on the grounds of the University.

During the protest meeting, the students added to their list of demands. They insisted that the Government should end the ancient feudal system, and allow farmers to own property. They also demanded an amnesty for political prisoners the students claim were gaoled by the old Government.
