    ON THE CLYDE -- THE COMMISSIONING OF THE ROYAL NAVY'S LATEST SUBMARINE , THE OPPORTUNE. SHE'S THE LAST OF THREE OBERON-CLASS VESSELS BUILT FOR THE ADMIRALTY BY SCOTTS OF GREENOCK.

    THE SUBMARINE WAS HANDED OVER THREE MONTHS BEFORE THE CONTRACT DATE. A SPOKESMEN SAID IT WAS A COMPLETION RECORD FOR THE YARD.

    THE OPPORTUNE'S SKIPPER IS A SCOT -- LIEUT-COMMANDER EDWARD CLELAND, OF DARVEL, AYRSHIRE. HER CREW INCLUDES TWO OFFICERS AND SEVERAL RATINGS FROM AUSTRALIA AND CANADA.

    SIMILAR SUBMARINES ARE BEING BUILT FOR COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES. THE MEN WILL BE TRAINED WHILE THE OPPORTUNE IS ON WORKING-UP EXERCISES WITH THE THIRD SQUADRON BASED AT GARELOCH.
