  • Description

The heart of Nigeria's Federal Military Government, Major-General Yakubu Gowon, on Wednesday (February 14) went for a flight in a helicopter which was seized from forces of the breakaway state of Biafra.

The helicopter - a Bristol Westland five - seater - was captured from Biafran forces at Udi earlier this month.

On Wednesday it landed at Dodan Barracks, Lagos, - General Gowon's residence - where it was shown to foreign and Nigerian newsmen before taking the General and others on a short flight.

General Gowon, who is also Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria's Armed Forces, was accompanied by Commissioner for Finance, Chief Obafemi Awolowo; Commissioner for Communication, Alhaji Amino Kano, and other senior officers.

Yesterday (Thursday) the Biafran leader, Lieutenant_Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu, said his state welcomed any peace initiative that would lead to an honourable settlement of the war with the Federal Government. In a five-minute speech, Colonel Ojukwu commented on the latest moves to halt the seven and a half month old civil war. He said Biafra sought peace " with Nigeria - not in Nigeria".
