  • Description

President Leopold Senghor of Senegal ended a three-day visit to Belgium on Thursday (22 March) with a courtesy call on King Baudouin.

President Senghor has been holding talks with Common Market officials in his capacity as the representative of the 18 African states which belong to the Yaounde Convention. The Convention, which comes up for renewal this year, links the trade of member states with the Common Market.

While in Brussels, President Senghor had talks with Common Market Commission President Francois-Xavier Ortoli, the Commissioner for Development and Aid, Mr. Jean Francois Denieu, and also attended a full working session of the EEC.

He told newsmen at the EEC headquarters on Wednesday (21 March) that he supported the principle of reciprocal preferences in trading relations between the Common Market and Yaounde Convention members. "We don't want to come as beggars," he said. He also noted that African states would not accept trade preferences in Europe without also giving concessions.
