  • Description

Competitors from the German Democratic Republic dominated the first day's competition at the "Lugano Trophy" International Walking Race held at Lugano in Switzerland on Friday (12 October).

The Lugano Trophy -- one of the most important international walking competitions -- was won first in 1961 and 1963 by the British walker Ken Matthaws, who did not compete this year. Nicolai Smaga of the Soviet Union won in 1967. In 1965 and 1970, the East Germans took the Lugano Trophy to establish their present domination in the field.

This year eighty-one competitors from nine nations -- from Europe North America and the Soviet Union -- competed for the Trophy.

The race over 20 kilometres (12 1/2 miles) was a tussle between the leading East German walkers Hans Reimann and Karl Stadtmuller. Reiman led at 5 kms, Stadtmuller was in first place at 10 and 15 kms, but Reimann went to the lead again to take the Trophy at 20 kms. Stadtmuller finished in second place with Rom Laird of the United States in third plate and Smaga of the Soviet Union, fourth.

Reimann's winning time for the 20 kms was one hour 29 minutes 31 seconds, only five seconds ahead of Stadtmuller.
