  • Description

Visnews was granted a rare chance to film and interview Tunisian Prescient Habib Bourguiba at the Palace of Cartage, Tunis, last week. The 68-year-old leader spoke, often with deep emotion, about the problem of eventually handing on the leadership of the country -- a problem heightened by the personality cult that had grown up around him.

Speaking in French, the President told the head of the Visnews Paris Bureau, Jean Magny, that the state had been largely built around the personality of its President. "It is not easy to replace a man like men," he added, through he said he was convinced of the ability of present government leaders, including Prime Mistier Hedi Nouira, who has been named next head of State.

A second major topic introduced during the interview was the future of the Organisation of Arab Unity. President Bourguiba admitted that tribal hatred and the manoeuvring of the big powers made the union very fragile.

A translation of the French SOF is included in the commentary overleaf. A version of this interview with Arabic sound, TUNISIA: RESIDENT BOURGUIBA, IN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, EXPRESSES OPTIMISM OVER THE FUTURE OF HIS COUNTRY, was serviced on January 11th.
