Franciszek Gajowniczek, now 70, is one of 4,000 Poles arriving in Rome for the ???mony. This is the first Polish post-war pilgrimage to Rome. The Priest who will be given the official title of "blessed".... by Pope Paul.... is Father Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Franciscan Friar who, at the age of 47, volunteered to die in the starvation cells of Auschwitz is place of Sergeant Gajowniczek. Father Kolbe was one of the best-known priests in Poland, and is the first victim of a Nazi concentration camp to be beatified.
