    Defending champion Rod Laver of Australia stepped onto the centre court to open Wimbledon 1970 today (June 22) and the match saw him defeat United States player George "Butch" Seewagen 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.

    The win for number on seed Laver takes him on the first leg towards winning the Wimbledon title for the third successive among the select band who have been champion for three or more years in succession. Britain's Fred Perry was the last man to win the title for three successive years 1934-1936).

    Playing the first match on the centre court Laver set the championships in motion against 23-year-old New Yorker "Butch" Seewagen, making his first visit to Britain.

    Seewagen kept the score two all in the first set then laver Went on to win eleven successive games and the second set 6.0 laver finally won 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.
