  • Description

DAR-ES-SALAAM, WHERE SOLDIERS OF THE FIRST BATTALION, TANGANYIKA RIFLES MUTINIED ON MONDAY AGAINST THEIR BRITISH OFFICERS, YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) REMAINED IN A STATE OF TENSION. CASUALTIES HAVE BEEN PUT AT 17 DEAD AND MORE THAN 100 WOUNDED.

THE STREETS THEMSELVES BEAR EVIDENCE OF THE WIDESPREAD LOOTING WHICH ACCOMPANIED THE RIOTING. WORKING WITH POLICE. SHOPKEEPERS HAVE BEEN BUSY ESTIMATING THEIR LOSSES. MUCH OF THE DAMAGE WAS DONE DURING RAIDS AT NIGHT.

DURING THE FOLLOWING MORNING NEW PANIC WAS CAUSED BY RUMOURS OF FRESH RIOTING IN ONE QUARTER OF THE CITY. THE FALSE ALARM, SPREADING QUICKLY, CLEARED THE STREETS ONCE MORE AS TRADERS PUT UP SHUTTERS AND HURRIED HOME FOR SAFETY.

PRESIDENT NYERERE -- WHOSE WHEREABOUTS, AT FIRST UNKNOWN, CAUSED WIDESPREAD SPECULATION -- YESTERDAY WAS REPORTED TO BE "SAFE AND SOUND" IN HIS PALACE AT DAR-ES-SALAAM. BROADCASTING YESTERDAY, HE DESCRIBED THE ARMY REVOLT AS A "GREAT DISGRACE" TO TANGANYIKA. HE THANKED "ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED TO STOP THIS DISGRACE FROM GETTING OUT OF HAND."
HIS GOVERNMENT, REPORTED TO BE FUNCTIONING NORMALLY, HAS APPEALED TO THE PUBLIC FOR CALM AND ORDER. BUT MANY BRITISH NATIONALS -- 20,000 OF WHOM LIVE IN TANGANYIKA -- HAVE ALREADY STARTED LEAVING THE COUNTRY. FIRST TO LEAVE WERE THE WIVES AND CHILDREN OF THE OUSTED BRITISH OFFICERS. TAKING WHAT LITTLE THEY COULD, THEY FOLLOWED THE OFFICERS TO NAIROBI -- WHERE 2,000 BRITISH TROOPS HAVE NOW BEEN ASSEMBLED IN CASE OF FURTHER TROUBLES.
