    CROWDS HAVE BEEN POURING INTO THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART IN PARIS SINCE THE OPENING LAST SATURDAY (30 SEPTEMBER) OF THE FIFTH BIENNALE OF WORKS BY YOUNG ARTISTS GIVING AMPLE PROOF TO THE CLAIM THAT IT IS THE BEST OF ONE YET.

    RULES FOR THE BIENNALE REMAIN THE SAME AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS. ARTISTS MUST BE BETWEEN 25 AND 35 YEARS OF AGE. SELECTIONS ARE LEFT TO THE 54 PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES. THE EXHIBITS MUST HAVE BEEN DONE WITHIN THE LAST FOUR YEARS WITH THE EMPHASIS, ALWAYS, ON YOUTH VIGOR AND UNPREDICTABILITY.

    THIS IS TRULY A SHOW FOR YOUTH. NOT ONLY ARE THE PLASTIC ARTS PRESENTED, BUT ALSO THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS, MUSICAL EVENTS AND HAPPENINGS.

    FOR THE FIRST TIME THE ART GROUP INCLUDES ARCHITECTURE, PHOTOGRAPHY AND MEDALS.

    THE FRENCH HAVE ONE OF THE STRONGEST SECTIONS AT THE SHOW, OPEN UNTIL 5 NOVEMBER, ALTHOUGH THEY CANNOT CLAIM ALL THE CREDIT. THE SECTION HAS (22 PAINTERS AND SCULPTORS, 55 WHOM ARE FOREIGNERS WORKING IN FRANCE.

    SPECTATORS VIEWING THE 1,182 EXHIBITS HAVE TO BE NIMBLE. A TOUR REQUIRES AMONG OTHER THINGS WEAVING THROUGH AN EXHIBIT OF GIANT PLASTIC BALLOONS SWINGING FROM THE CEILING ON RUBBER CABLES, NEGOTIATIONS A MAZE OF COLOURED WIRES STRUNG FROM CEILING TO FLOOR AND BEING PIVOTED AROUND INSIDE A BOX.

    THE LARGEST EXHIBIT IS FROM ITALY - A THICK METAL HOSEPIPE PAINTED APPLE GREEN AND LYING COILED FOR ABOUT 50 YARDS (45 METRES) INSIDE THE EXHIBITION HALL.
