    The eighth World Petroleum Congress opened in Moscow's Kremlin Palace of Congresses on Sunday (13 June). Some 6,000 scientists, engineers and oil specialists from nearly 60 countries are attending the Congress which is scheduled to end on Saturday (19 June).

    Some 180 reports are expected to be read at the Congress, dealing with the topical problems of the refining of oil, and the scientific methods of forecasting deposits. After the Congress proper ends, the delegates will visit the main oil-extracting regions of the Soviet Union -- Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Volga region, and Siberia.

    At Sunday's opening, the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers for the Soviet Union, Mr Efremov, welcomed the delegates and read messages from his Government wishing the Congress success.

    SYNOPSIS: At the opening of the eighth World Petroleum Congress in Moscow on Sunday, Mr Efremov -- the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers -- welcomed six thousand delegates representing nearly 60 countries. The Congress is expected to end on saturday.

    Some 180 reports are expected to be read during the Congress, dealing with the problems of exploration and treatment of oil throughout the world.

    After the Congress proper ends, the delegates will visit the main oil-extracting regions of the Soviet Union -- Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Volga region, and Siberia. One of the main themes is the use to which the by-products of oil are put and the importance of petroleum fuel in the economy of most countries.
