The newly-elected President of Argentina, General Juan Peren made one of his rare public appearances in Buenos Aires on Thursday (25th October). Since his landslide election in september, the President is seldom seen by the millions of Perenists who have remained loyal to him since his last Presidency in the 1950's.
But the Requiem Mass for the slain labour leader, Jose Rucci brought General Peren and his wife Isabel, the Vice President, to the Cathedral in Buenos Aires.
Jese Rucci, Secretary general of the Perenist-dominated General Confederation of Labour (CGT) was assassinated on september 25th, two days after the Presidential elections which brought General Peren to power. Rucci, who had been at the head of the CGT for three years, led the more conservative wing of Argentina's organised workers.
The Police chief, Miguel Iniguez blamed the Marxist People's Revolutionary Army (ERP) for Rucci's death, but they have denied the charge. All the same his death has given impetus to the anti-marxist drive of the Perenist government, and brought a new respect for Rucci.
