    The new Women's World Ice Skating Champion is Linda Fratianne of the United States.

    SYNOPSIS: East German competitor, Annett Poetzsch seemed set for a win. Already European Champion, she had established a handy lead in the World Championships at the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, on Thursday (3 March). But earlier she fell, losing points, but did manage to land a triple salchow and her performance put her into second place.

    Linda Fratianne of the United States also fell trying a triple salchow during her routine, but included a successful triple toe loop. Last year's title was also won by the United States, but the champion, Dorothy Hamill, did not defend her title after turning professional.

    Twenty one competitors took part in the Women's freestyle section. Despite her fall, Linda Fratianne's brilliant skating put her well ahead of the competition.

    CUE AT 65 feet 1 min 44 secs Miss Fratianne finished her routine with a score of 189 point 26 points to make her champion.
