  • Description

Passengers freed from the Turkish DC-9 airliner hijacked to Sofia, Bulgaria, on Wednesday returned on Thursday night to emotional greetings from relatives and friends waiting for them at Ankara airport.

Hundreds of people cheered as the pilot of the hijacked jet, Captain Hami Unlu, carried the only child among the passengers--six--year-old Australian boy--down the ramp from the aircraft sent to bring them back to Turkey.

More than sixty people had spent 28 tense, nerve-wracking hours aboard the hijacked aircraft, after their captors--four armed men--threatened to blow it up with them aboard, unless the Turkish Government freed six members of the leftwing "Turkish People's Liberation Army."
The Turkish Government refused to accept the terms, but the hijackers surrendered to Bulgarian authorities in exchange for a promise of political asylum.

Passengers included four West Germans, two Norwegians, a Dutchman, a retired American army officer, and Omer Inonu, eldest son of the veteran Turkish ex-President Ismet Inonu, leader of the Republican People's Party.
