Background: Tens of thousand of Burmese Muslims have been streaming across the border into Bangladesh saying they've been forced to by the Burmese authorities.

SYNOPSIS: So far an estimated 80 thousand refugees have crossed the border. These were travelling through the bush on Sunday (30 April). Bangladesh authorities say the flood, which began about four weeks earlier, had continued unabated. The refugees tell of harsh treatment at the hands of the Burmese authorities and troops who've been overseeing the exodus.

Burmese authorities claim that those who fled across the border into Bangladesh were illegal immigrants. The authorities said the refugees were fleeing to avoid immigration checks.

The first thing the refugees receive were possible is medical help and attention. For Bangladesh is worried about the question of illegal immigration into its territory and that health authorities are unable to carry out all the necessary checks.

The official Bangladesh News agency has reported that Burmese troops have opened fire on some of the Muslims crossing the border and have also hit a border refugee camp inside Bangladesh. Bangladesh -- in an effort to control the inrush of refugees - sealed its 150 mile (250 kilometre) border with Burma of Friday (28 April). However, since then the measure has been relaxed. A Bangladesh Government spokesmen said "we cannot push them out to face the bullet".

The Bangladesh Government lodged a strong protest with Burmese authorities over the shooting by Burmese troops. The Burmese Ambassador to Bangladesh U Thein Win, has been called to the Bangladesh Foreign office several time and has been invited to visit refugee camps, Most of the refugees are believe to have come from villages around Buthidaung in north west Burma. Some of the refugees who've entered Bangladesh say they were initially turned away at the border but tried again because they'd been fired on. More were waiting in the jungles for their chance to cross.
